Description

CRC Retreat 17-21 March 2025 / Gustav-Stresemann-Institut Bonn

In March 2025 we will have our next retreat in Bonn at the Gustav Stresemann Institut (the other GSI).
Young scientists will participate from Monday to Thursday, while Project Leaders and other senior scientists will participate Tuesday to Friday.
Lunch will be served at 12:30, the official start of the retreat.
The scientific portion of the meeting will start at 2 p.m. and conclude Friday at 4 p.m (Thursday 3 p.m. for Young Scientists).

Feedback forms:

Here on the Indico home-page of the retreat, under Materials, you will find links to two feedback forms. One ("Retreat feedback form") is meant to be filled out on Thursday during the lunch break, while the other ("Retreat ongoing comments pool") can be used to leave comments about anything anytime during the event.

YS questions box

If you wish to ask questions during the talks anonymously during the YS part of the program, feel free to use this form.

Tuesday evening activity:

On Tuesday evening 8 project leaders will be available for an informal discussion on leadership and career perspectives. There will be two sessions at 19:30 and at 20:30. During the coffee breaks on Monday and Tuesday, registration sheets will be available to book a spot in each of the two sessions. More information is available in the timetable.

Informal evening: Leadership and career 2h

IMPORTANT: Register for each session adding your name to the session lists. Sessions are ~50minutes long and start at 19:30 and 20:30.

Possible questions to be addressed during the evening:

      1. If you were a PhD student again, with your experience today, what would you do differently and what are the lessons you have learned on your own journey?
      2. What key questions should young scientists ask themselves when deciding whether to continue in academia or explore other career avenues, and how can they make informed decisions during uncertain times?
      3. How do you foresee the landscape of physics careers evolving in the next decade, and what should young scientists be aware of as they plan their future paths?
      4. In your experience, what are the most critical skills — both technical and soft — that young physicists should develop to succeed in today’s competitive job market?
      5. What are some of the common challenges or risks that young physicists face when trying to secure a permanent academic position, and how can they proactively address them?
      6. For those who have chosen to leave physics, could you share which career branches/companies they moved into?
      7. How do you weigh the pros and cons of pursuing a traditional academic career versus exploring opportunities in industry, government, or other sectors?
      8. What key steps or strategies would you recommend for a PhD student to build a strong foundation for a successful career in physics, whether in academia or beyond?
Speakers: Prof. Frithjof Karsch (Room S25), Prof. Guy Moore (Room S01-02), Prof. Owe Philipsen (Room S04), Prof. Dirk Rischke (Room S09-11), Prof. Laura Sagunski (Room S12-13), Prof. Jürgen Schaffner-Bielich (Room S18), Prof. Marc Wagner (Room S07)
