Molecular motors are tiny machines, built of molecules, that convert chemical energy into mechanical work. Despite their minuscule size, just a few nanometers, these marvels of nature drive a variety of vital biological processes from intracellular transport to muscle contraction. We will meet the most prominent molecular motors, explore their roles in biological systems, and examine the basic physical principles that enable their functions. We will also present an example of an artificial molecular motor constructed from non-motor parts.
